Rea Vaya will begin operations on 30 August 2009 with its starter service from Thokoza Park to Ellis Park East. This trunk route is marked in red, while the complementary routes are highlighted in green and yellow.
Tickets & Times
Rea Vaya's starter service is now in operation.Fare system
Tickets are available in the form of paper tickets which will be used to pay for your journey. The Rea Vaya tickets are colour-coded and the fares are as follows:
| R8.00 (Yellow) | Full trip, any number of transfers in 2 hours |
| R5.00 (Red) | Trunk routes only |
| R3.00 (Blue) | Inner-city trip |
- Please note that you should never pay more than these rates for your tickets.
- Tickets will initially be sold for cash only.
- You will be able to buy the tickets from Rea Vaya Ticket Vendors at and around all the stations and most stops on the Rea Vaya route.
- Tickets are NOT sold by the drivers
- Please buy your tickets BEFORE you travel as it will help ease congestion at stations!
- Trunk route: 5am to 8:00am and again from 4pm to 7:00pm every five minutes in peak times and in 20 minute intervals during off peak times
- CBD Circle Routes: 6am to 8pm every 15 minutes in both directions
- Operations are every Monday to Saturday including public holidays

Commuters are advised that there are slight variations in Rea Vaya’s timetable on Saturdays and that the service will not run on Sundays at present.
The Saturday timetable is as follows:
Thokoza Park – Ellis Park
6:00 – 8:00 every 10 min
8:00 – 15:00 every 30 minutes
Ellis Park – Thokoza Park
7:00 – 14:00 every 30 min
14:00 – 16:00 every 20 minutes
CBD circle routes
First service departs Ghandi Square at 7:00
Last service departs Ghandi Square at 16:00
