Statistics compiled for the first 10 days of operation have revealed that the City’s new Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit system transports an average of 16 000 every day.
REA VAYA figures for the beginning of September show some 16 000 commuters use it daily.
“The statistics indicate that Thokoza Park is the busiest station in the mornings, with approximately 1 900 commuters using the station to travel to destinations along the trunk route during peak time.
The second busiest station is Diepkloof Station with about 1 400 commuters recorded every morning,” says Rehana Moosajee, the City’s MMC for Transportation.
The Library Gardens station is one of the busiest in the afternoons
Moosajee adds that in the afternoons, the busiest stations are the Art Gallery Station with an average of 1 300 commuters, and the Carlton and Library Gardens stations with more than 1 120 commuters each.
With so many people using the system, the City has launched a campaign running from 14 to 30 September 2009 to encourage commuters to provide feedback about ways in which the Rea Vaya system can be improved.
“We are basically in a testing phase with Rea Vaya as this is the first system of its kind to be introduced and not without its challenges. We are, however, serious about improving Rea Vaya and delivering a seamless public transport system to our commuters. In order to do so, we need commuters to tell us how and where we can improve based on their first-hand experiences of using Rea Vaya,” she says.
Commuters can SMS suggestions to 33422 during the campaign period and by participating they stand the chance to win R500 in cash. |
