Rea Vaya construction is taking place along Empire Road between Jan Smuts Avenue and the intersection of Joubert and Sam Hancock streets.
The waterline relocation
INFORMATION given on 12 May 2011.
Project location – BRT Section 4: projects starts at Empire Road/ Jan Smuts Avenue and transverse along Empire Road and terminates at the intersection of Joubert Street/ Sam Hancock covering a total length of 1.3 km.
Scope of works – This section is 1.3 km long. The detailed scope of work also includes construction of the dedicated BRT bus lanes, relocation of services running along the bus lanes and the resurfacing of mixed traffic lanes, street lighting, construction of a station platform and paving of sidewalks. The one BRT stations along the route will be executed under a separate contract.
Construction progress – Construction works in progress or to be completed is as follows:
- Finalising relocation of storm water pipes
- Relocation of electrical services and installation of street lights
- Relocation of 750 mm water mains
- Finalizing retaining wall at Helpmekaar School
- Widening of the route along Empire and Joubert streets
- Box cutting along Empire Road
- Telkom manholes and installation of ducts
Traffic Accommodation – two lanes will be opened to traffic throughout construction process. No road closures are anticipated. Construction of major intersections will be undertaken over weekends. |
