Work has progressed from the Western end of Market and Commissioner moving towards Troye and Mooi. The constructor is working very hard to complete the platforms for the planned BRT stations. Challenges are still being experienced with unknown services and a big effort is being put into avoiding service disruptions. To date, nine city blocks have the 40mm bitumen layers milled out and 16 intersections have been milled out and the 300mm BTB constructed
The contractor is busy completing the remaining station platforms. Separate teams are also working on constructing the BRT lanes between stations - Work has started from Troye between Market and Jeppe and on Mooi between Market and Jeppe. There are gas and water lines which must be relocated on the remaining station areas. Paving teams will start with paving the areas around the station areas towards the end of March in order to meet the contract deadline.
Traffic disruptions, including temporary lane closures will occur along Market and Commissioner Street between Miriam Makeba and Mooi and along Troye and Mooi between Market and Noord. Two lanes will always be open on roads where construction is taking place in order to try to alleviate the congestion. However, it is advised to try to avoid the roads mentioned above if at all possible. Alternative for travelling in the Inner City are the following:
For Market and Commissioner:
- For alternatives other than Market and Commissioner Streets, please try Fox, Marshall or Anderson Streets to the West or President and Pritchard Streets to the East.
