Locality Map: Smit & Wolmarans BRT
The Smit and Wolmarans BRT Upgrade project between Edith Cavell and Banket Streets commenced during October 2008, with the site handed over to Bophelong JV on 10 October 2008. The contract duration is six months, and completion of this contract is planned for the end of April 2009. This section of the BRT forms a critical link connecting other BRT trunk routes into the Inner City and the Ellis Park Precinct. These routes, including Smit and Wolmarans streets are to be completed in time for the Confederations Cup in June 2009.
The completed road upgrade will entail the provision of a single BRT lane and two (2) mixed traffic lanes in each direction for both Smit Street and Wolmarans Street for east-bound and west-bound traffic respectively. There will be a single BRT station in each of the streets, located at the intersection of Smit and Claim and Wolmarans and Claim streets.
Challenges are being encountered with the discovery of unknown services which have to be relocated. Layerworks for the Smit BRT station are substantially completed and this platform is due for completion in time for a hand-over for the construction of the BRT station by 22 January 2009. This would be preceded by the planned traffic deviation of one lane of the westbound traffic lanes in contra flow direction in Smit Street, which is planned to be implemented as from 14 January 2009.
