BRT Section 5

Construction work commenced on 9 June 2008 along Main Reef/Commando Road intersection to Empire/Jan Smuts intersection and will be completed sometime early next year. Work is occurring in the following sequence and in alternating strips of 500m long on either side of the existing roads:
- On Perth Road between Lewes Street and Lancaster Street
- On Kingsway Road between Lancaster and Main/University Road
- On Empire Road between Barry Hertzog Avenue and Owl Street
- On Empire Road between Owl Street and Yale Road
Currently Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit construction work is taking place in the median of the road along Empire Road between Owl and Yale Roads. This section of the BRT route will become operational in Phase1B in time for the FIFA Soccer World Cup in 2010. Some delays have been experienced due to rain and the discovery of a great deal of unknown services under the carriageway during the construction process, as well as the need to order non-standard kerbs which needed to be manufactured specifically for this section, due to the difference in road levels. The layerworks on this section are 97% completed and the black top will be completed by the end of February 2009. In essence the work between Yale and Owl Rd. is anticipated to be completed by end of February.
Once this section of BRT construction has been completed then work will begin on Kingsway road in the median of the road near to the University of Johannesburg. Work on the BRT has also commenced between Jan Smuts and Yale Rd, near the University of Witwatersrand and this area of the BRT construction is expected to be completed in the next four months. This area of the BRT route will be completed in time for the FIFA Soccer World Cup in 2010.
- Traffic disruptions, including temporary lane closures during off peak periods can be expected during construction.
- Permanent lane closures (one lane at a time) can be expected during widening of the carriageways.
