Phase 1 (Red Section): This is the section between the NI Freeway and the M1 freeway. This layer-works for this section were completed in May 2008 and is approximately 4.7 km long. BRT stations to be constructed at Booysens and Nasrec Stations with related pedestrian bridges during 2009 targeted to be ready and forming infrastructure for use during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Phase 2A (Yellow Section): Construction of this approximately 3.3km long section between the M1 freeway and Anderson Street in the CBD started in July 2008. The main layer-works upgrade for BRT in this section have been done. Elements of construction to complete the section are underway which is widening part of roadway where two BRT Stations are located. The bulk of the work currently in progress is the section from cnr Anderson street and Pat Mbatha stretching down Miriam Makeba street to cnr Market Street and Miriam Makeba. This section is anticipated for completion in May 2009.
Traffic Accommodation:
Vehicles are currently being deviated off Miriam Makeba street between Marshal street and Market streets. Public transport vehicles are also being deviated off Pat Mbatha Highway from Trump street as previously linked back to Anderson street.
Phase 2B (Green Section): This section is between the N1 western by-pass freeway and the intersection of Soweto Highway and Mooki/Main Street in Soweto. Construction began in July 2009 and is approximately 4km long. Excavations and preparation for layer-works is well underway. This section will have four stations; namely Immink, Diepkloof Overbridge, Madlala and Hermanus. Road works target date for completion is May 2009.
2B: There have been some lane reductions from Immink road approach in Diepkloof up to Madlala street turn-off into Orlando East. Protective new jersey barriers have been erected to separate mixed traffic from the construction activity. There has also been a speed limit reduction from 80km/h to 60km/h.

Koma/Potchefstroom Road to Modderspruit Culvert - BRT Section 1 Contracts A and C
Contract A of Section 1: Construction work commenced on 29th September 2008 from the intersection of Koma Road/Old Potchefstroom, running along Old Potchefstroom Road to the intersection of Old Potchefstroom/Klipspruitvalley Road and will be completed in time for the Confederations Cup in 2009.
This portion is comprised of 2, 2km of road works and 3 BRT stations.
Currently Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit construction work is taking place in the median of the road along Old Potchefstroom Road. Some delays have been experienced due to rain and the blasting that has had to take place at the intersection of Old Potchefstroom/Klipspruitvalley Road in order create space required for the construction of the BRT station. The layer works on this section are progressing quite well in trying to make for lost time and the black top is anticipated to commence towards end February 2009.
- Traffic disruptions, including temporary lane closures during off peak periods can be expected during construction.
- Permanent lane closures (one lane at a time) can be expected during widening of the carriageway.
Contract C of Section 1: Construction work commenced on 29th September 2008 from the intersection of Klipspruitvalley/Sofasonke Road, running along Mooki Street to the Modderspruit Culvert in Noordgesig and will be completed in time for the Confederations Cup in 2009.
This portion is comprised of 3, 5km of road works and 5 BRT stations.
