A party was thrown for BRT staff to mark the system’s first birthday, while commuters got coffee mugs and were able to send their birthday wishes.
IT'S been a round of celebrations for Rea Vaya as it turns one today.

First, there was a party at Bez Valley Park yesterday – with jumping castles, football, baseball and loads of good cheer.
The party, on Sunday, 29 August, was for the staff who keeps the Bus Rapid Transit show on the road, to celebrate the achievement and thank them for their hard work.
Before the festivities got into top gear, the member of the mayoral committee for transportation, Rehana Moosajee, welcomed all the employees who made up the Rea Vaya team.

"I am proud to say that, with the many challenges that we have been faced with, we are now a year old and still going very strong."
After she gave a vote of thanks, lunch was served and some serious fun was had, with the team getting to know each other better.
One bus driver, who only wanted to be identified as Lucky, said he was very happy that Rea Vaya had come this far. "I started with Rea Vaya in the beginning and I must admit that I am impressed and very proud of the hard work that has been put in," said Lucky.
The day was filled with festivity as all the team members saw their hard work paying off. It was their day – and when Monday morning dawned, it was the turn of commuters. COFFEE CUPSMoosajee started her morning very early, visiting BRT stations around Joburg to keep spirits up and celebrate the milestone with passengers. Her first stop was at Westgate Station, where she handed out branded Rea Vaya coffee mugs to every commuter.
A day out for football and fun
They could also sign and write birthday messages on the one-year celebration posters that were at every station. Westgate Station was packed to capacity during Moosajee's visit, with many people keen to find out exactly was happening.
There was some jostling for mugs, but there were enough for everyone. Young and old, male and female, they all left the station with smiles, saying "Thank you Rea Vaya and happy birthday."
