YET another temporary road closure has been scheduled from the beginning of February until the end of May.
This closure is along a section of the Soweto Highway, between Madhlala and Mooki streets, and is necessary to complete construction for the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system at Nasrec.
Work includes widening the lanes to incorporate a special BRT lane in the middle of the road, and erecting a BRT station along the route, says Zwakele Magagula, the development manager for the Nasrec BRT. Private motorists are advised to use other routes such as through Orlando East while the road is closed.
The westbound section of the road will be partially closed to private vehicles; it will only be open taxis and BRT buses. "Allowances have only been made for taxis and buses to move along the affected section," says Magagula.
During the four months of construction, road signage will be erected to guide traffic along the main deviation route. Motorists are urged to keep to the speed limit and obey all warning signs.
