IN THE NEW Roads are being widened, bus stations are being built and pavements are being upgraded along the BRT route from Soweto to Braamfontein.
ROADWORKS are being undertaken as part of the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system upgrade, through the western part of the city, from the eastern edge of Soweto to the bottom of Braamfontein, involving the widening of roads.
Upgrades along Fuel Road
Upgrades of the road from the Main Reef and Commando roads intersection in Riverlea continue along Commando Road, Fuel Road and Harmony Street. Work ends at the intersection of Portland Street and Perth Road in Rossmore. The section of road is approximately 3,9 kilometres long. COMPLETION IN MARCH
Along Fuel Road North, from Oudshoorn Road to Harmony Street, progress is at 86 percent and from Harmony Street to Perth Road it is 78 percent complete. All construction down the eastbound carriageway is scheduled to be completed by mid-March.
Rea Vaya construction along Empire Road
Overall progress along this route is 67 percent finished. Road works in this area are divided into five sectors. Sector one, along Perth Road between Portland and Lewes road, is 74 percent complete; sector two, between Lewes and University roads, is 77 percent complete; sector 3a, between University and Cedar roads, is 38 percent complete; sector 3b, between Cedar Road and Barry Hertzog Avenue, is 61 percent complete; sector four, between Barry Hertzog Avenue and Yale Road, is 86 percent complete; while sector five, from Yale Road to Jan Smuts Avenue, is 96 percent complete. Major construction in progress includes work on the BRT lanes along Empire Road between Jan Smuts Avenue and Yale Road, as well as along Empire Road between Barry Hertzog Avenue and Yale Road. Relocation of services will be taking place opposite the University of Johannesburg’s entrance and on Stanley Road between Kingsway and Menton roads. Other upgrades are under way at the Johannesburg Country Club, opposite the Media 24 building and on Stanley Road between Barry Hertzog Avenue and Menton Road. Construction is slow along Stanley Road between Kingsway and Menton roads because of a number of factors such as underground services, traffic accommodation and restricted work area.
