A spectacular day was had by a group of young athletes from schools in Soweto, who made up Team Rea Vaya.
THE Rea Vaya has won the hearts of the schools it approached to make up Team Rea Vaya, which took part in this year's Discovery 702 Walk the Talk.
The kids loved the event, and some finished way ahead of the actual allocated time
Rea Vaya sponsored 100 young athletes from four Soweto schools at the Walk the Talk. They were Tiyimiseni Primary School in Meadowlands, Mbuyisa Mazhuru in Orlando West, Ekuthuleni Combined in Diepkloof and Lulama Primary School. It was the first time the young athletes participated in a race of that size.
Held on Sunday, 25 July, it is was the annual Walk the Talk, a popular day on the Joburg sporting calendar. The race takes place through the northern suburbs of the city, starting and finishing at Marks Park Sports Club in Emmarentia.
Noma Xabana, the BRT's liaison and public relations officer, said: "Spending the day with the young athletes from the schools in Soweto was great fun. The children were just so eager to start the race. One even came through within 40 minutes of the allocated time of about an hour.
"Many of these young kids would probably never have been exposed to a race of this magnitude. As Rea Vaya, we have a sense of great satisfaction that we got to expose some of our children from Soweto to this great annual Joburg walk," she added.
The Discovery 702 Walk the Talk is hosted by the City, Talk Radio 702 and the medical aid group, Discovery. Walk the Talk is about fitness – and fun. There are four walks on the day: a 5km or 8km fun walk or 15km or 30km for the more competitive walkers.
On 25 July, Team Rea Vaya joined the excited throng of people chatting to their friends, stretching muscles ahead of the work, or simply chilling out in the winter sun.
It was a fun-filled day, with families pushing prams, brightly dressed walkers blowing vuvuzelas and singing, and even many of the family pets walking briskly on their leashes.
A proud Jabulani Malungani, a teacher and sports administrator at Tiyimiseni, said: "Rea Vaya hosted us with aplomb. We would like to thank them and extend our hand as a school to any of their initiatives."
A colleague from Mbuyisa Mazhuru, Makhotso Sambo, added: "Our kids thoroughly enjoyed the walk and we hope Rea Vaya makes it an annual event to take our kids to the walk."
Thulani Ndlovu, a head of department at Ekuthuleni Combined, was also pleased with the day. "It was a spectacular event and our children need to be exposed to such an environment in order to foster a generally healthy lifestyle," Ndlovu said.
The Walk the Talk is aligned with the City's objective to promote healthier lifestyles and to foster social cohesion. Making sure the day went smoothly, roads were closed and the metro police, emergency management services and South African Police Service kept an eye on the event.
