The pedestrian bridge will make it easier for people – particularly those in wheelchairs or pushing prams – to get to the New Canada Road Station.
THE new Rea Vaya Station and a pedestrian bridge on New Canada Road in Soweto have been completed.
The Pennyville Station is next to New Canada railway station, and is one of three stations built along the Phase 1B route, the second Rea Vaya trunk route.
The bridge spans New Canada Road from Pennyville to the new station. It has been designed to allow easy use by those using wheelchairs and push chairs or prams.
Mbuyiseni Mhayise, a local resident said that the residents cannot wait for the station and the bridge to be officially opened.
"Our lives will be much easier with the station and the bridge close by. I'm happier about the bridge as it will be easier to cross over to the train station," he said.
"There is a lot of traffic in the morning and as a result crossing the road is difficult," he explained.
Other works taking place close to the station include paving pavements, installing kerbs and laying pipes. When complete, the station will benefit residents of Pennyville, a mixed housing development that was initiated by the City in 2008.
Works on the stretch from Buffalo Street in Pennyville towards Main Reef Road are underway. The road has been widened and the median BRT lanes are nearing final stages.
Phase 1B's route will start in Noordgesig in Soweto and travel to Parktown, and then into the city centre. It will cover areas such as Pennyville and New Canada, Highgate, Kingsway Road, Stanley Road, Empire Road, Parktown, Braamfontein and Rissik Street.
It will also pass the universities of Johannesburg and Witwatersrand, as well as Helen Joseph and Rahima Moosa hospitals, and is due for completion by June. Once completed, the new route will be 18 kilometres long with 10 stations. Its estimated total cost is R1, 2-billion.
However, Phase 1 B will start opening in 2013. "The route will start operating in 2013, in the interim the City is working on ensuring that a sizable content of the buses that will operate on the phase 1B will be manufactured locally to in order to create jobs."said Nomalizo Xabana, Senior Marketing Specialist for Rea Vaya.
At the beginning of the month, four new stations were opened, extending T1, the first trunk route. These include the Rissik Street, Harrison Street, Park Stations in the central business district and Basothong Station which is in the City's south peripheral industrial section in Selby.
The newly operating stations are:
- Basothong Station at Selby South, serving T1 and C1;
- Rissik Street Station, serving T1 via Civic Centre and C3;
- Harrison Street Station, serving T1 via Civic Centre and C3; and,
- Park Station, serving T1 via Civic Centre and C3
