There is no need to stay at home on Sundays any more, with a full Rea Vaya service running east to west across town on the day.
REA Vaya now runs a complete Sunday service, with buses operating on its trunk and feeder routes from 6am until 6pm and on the inner city distribution routes from 6am until 5.30pm.
The first Sunday service was introduced on 24 October and the reception from commuters was satisfactory. "On the first Sunday of operation, only just over a thousand passengers used the service.
The City is hoping that the numbers will increase as time progresses and people get to know about the service," says Jeff Ngcobo, Rea Vaya's operations manager.
As on other days, the Sunday service operates on all Rea Vaya routes from Soweto in the southwest to Ellis Park in the eastern edge of the inner city.
The Sunday service had always been part of Rea Vaya's plans to provide commuters with an affordable and convenient public transport alternative. The introduction has been phased as the bus operating company builds capacity.
Bus operating hours have also been extended by an hour for the last bus during the week and by two hours for the last bus on weekends. On weekdays, Rea Vaya buses run from Thokoza Park to Ellis Park between 4.50am and 8pm and from 5.40am until 9pm in the opposite direction. There are minor variations in the weekend timetable.
In addition, feeder buses for Rea Vaya commuters who don't have a station near where they live run from Protea Glen to Thokoza Park and from Eldorado Park to Lakeview. They take passengers to the trunk route stations, where they can catch a bus to the CBD.
Feeder buses operate from 5am to 7.30pm from the feeder areas to the stations and from 5.30am to 10pm from stations to feeder services on weekdays and. Commuters who use feeder buses pay only R3,50 a trip if their journey at the trunk route.
A trip on a feeder bus connecting to a trunk route in the CBD costs R9,50, while a complementary service from Dobsonville to Ellis Park costs R6. Commuters travelling from Naledi via Thokoza Park Station to the CBD also pay R9,50, including those who travel from Jabavu via Lake View Station to the CBD and those who board from Mofolo via Boomtown Station to the inner city.
Complementary services from Dobsonville to the City cost R6 and a trip from Protea Glen via Thokoza Park and from Eldorado Park via Thokoza Park to the CBD costs R9,50.
The Saturday and Sunday service runs at half-hour intervals; weekday buses run at 20-minute intervals.
Rea Vaya tickets are available at all stations and at specified vendors. No tickets are sold on buses or by drivers.
