Travelling around Soweto will be safer, more reliable and more affordable as Rea Vaya’s phase 1A ends with the C2 route.

According to the member of the mayoral committee for transportation, Rehana Moosajee, it completes phase 1A of Rea Vaya.

“We hope that the introduction of this route will improve mobility around Soweto as well as give residents safe, reliable and affordable transport,” she said.

It starts at the corner of Elias Motsoaledi and Shomayeli streets in Dobsonville, from where it turns into Koma Road. Along Koma Road, there are visible designated Rea Vaya bus stops every 500 metres.

From Koma Road, the route turns into Chris Hani Road and heads to Maponya Mall via Thokoza Park Station and Lakeview Station.

It will be possible to catch the bus from Dobsonville to Maponya Mall from Monday to Friday between 5.15am and 7.30pm. On Saturday, bus services will start at 5.20am and run until 6.30pm; the Sunday a service will run from 6am to 6.30pm.

Going in the opposite direction, from Maponya Mall to Dobsonville, the service will operate between 5.50am and 8.10pm from Monday to Friday. On Saturday, the service will start at 5.55am and end at 7.05pm; the Sunday service will run from 6.30am to 7pm.

There will be a bus every 10 minutes at busier times and every 15 minutes during off-peak times, from Monday to Saturday. On Sunday the bus will run every 30 minutes throughout the day.

The bus fare for a journey between any two points on the route will be R3,50. However, if a commuter uses this route and then connects with the T1 route, they will need to buy a R9,50 ticket.

Feeder routes – F1 from Naledi to Thokoza Park; F2 from Protea Glen to Thokoza Park; F3 from Jabavu to Lakeview; and F5 from Eldorado Park to Lakeview – connect with the new C2 route at certain points.

The F1 connects with the C2 route at the intersection of Koma Road and Mohale Street; a passenger from the F2 route can join the C2 route at Thokoza Park Station and a passenger from the F3 and F5 routes can join the C2 route at Lakeview Station.
