IN THE NEWSTHE City of Johannesburg is pleased to announce that Rea Vaya services operated smoothly today, Tuesday 16th March 2010. Our experience over the last two days affirms that the Rea Vaya is a most resilient and versatile system capable of withstanding increased capacity under all conditions, said Rehana Moosajee, MMC for Transport in the City of Joburg. On the night of 15 March 2010, there was an incident of rock throwing as well as an attempted petrol bombing of a bus. However the quick actions of JMPD officers on the bus prevented any major damage. In the rock throwing incident, one passenger sustaining slight injury from broken glass and was taken to hospital by the JMPD. On Tuesday morning one bus was attacked with a brick and its windscreen smashed. The police were able to arrest the alleged perpetrator. All the feeder bus routes are patrolled by the law enforcement agencies whose operations against all unruly elements will continue relentlessly. Two metro police oficcers are on each feeder bus. The new feeder routes transporting passengers from the suburbs to the Rea Vaya stations as well as the main-line routes connecting Soweto with the Johannesburg CBD continue to work well and all the buses were filled to capacity. “We trust that the smooth nature of operations today becomes the defining feature for how services will work for the rest of this week and even further when operations so require. We remain very grateful for the patronage and determination in the entire Rea Vaya value chain: from passengers to drivers, from the law enforcement agencies to the back-office staff monitoring the technologically-advanced Control Centre. These are the real heroes who make Joburg great,” concludes MMC Moosajee.
